About Us - Our Doctor
Our Doctor: Sean Douglas Sawyer, V.M.D.
Sean Douglas Sawyer, V.M.D. has worked with animals his entire life, both as a child on the family farm in Maine and as a professional. He graduated from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He worked for a short-time as a field researcher for an avian ecologist from Dartmouth University and eventually in the Massachusetts biotech community. Dr. Sawyer graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2000 with a Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris after receiving the prestigious American Animal Hospital Association University of Pennsylvania Senior Student Award for Medicine and Surgery and the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital Senior Student Patient Care Award. Clients frequently ask about the difference between a V.M.D. and a D.V.M.; the short answer is they are the same, but the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine was founded by M.D.s who didn't want to change their degree, so added a "V" instead.
After graduation, Dr. Sawyer completed a highly selective one year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, North Grafton, Massachusetts. Upon finishing his advanced training, he entered small animal practice, working as an associate veterinarian at the Countryside Veterinary Hospital in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts and then as the Medical Director of Uxbridge Animal Hospital, Uxbridge, Massachusetts for several years. He practiced as an associate veterinarian at the VCA Westboro Animal Hospital in Westborough, Massachusetts until he founded PawSteps Veterinary Center in the spring of 2008. Dr. Sawyer had also spent several years, prior to opening PawSteps Veterinary Center, working part-time as the Veterinary Surgeon for the Massachusetts Animal Coalition Spay/Neuter Clinic (MAC S/N Clinic) at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine where he provided low-cost, high quality spays and neuters to shelter and rescue animals with the assistance of selected Tufts veterinary students.
Dr. Sawyer considers membership in the veterinary profession and continuing education critical to providing superb care to his patients. He maintains memberships with:
- AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)
- MVMA (Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association)
- AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)
- VIN (Veterinary Information Network)
Dr. Sawyer is most importantly the proud husband of Laura and father to Alison and Kevin. In addition, his family includes Jasmine the mixed-breed dog from Dog Orphans Humane Society, and Hazelnut the beagle from Animal Aid Foundation. When not at the veterinary center, Dr. Sawyer likes to work in the yard, attend soccer games, and ride his bike. Dr. Sawyer’s greatest desire is to use his excellent medical experience to provide each of his patients with quality, personalized veterinary care. Therefore, he is thrilled to own PawSteps Veterinary Center and looks forward to being your family veterinarian.
